DH and I really thought that when he re-enlisted, we would be ready to pick up, move, and start fresh somewhere neither of us had ever been.  It would be an adventure.  It would be the first time we’ve ever lived more than a few hours’ drive from our families…  It would prove that we can do this on our own.  What a bunch of crap.

We keep looking at the list and I keep thinking things like, "I don’t want to live there.  It’s all overcast all winter and that would suck for my bipolar."  "Nah, we can’t live there because DH likes the seasons changing and it’s perpetual summer there."  "Well, that place won’t work because it’s too cold."  "Seriously?!  We couldn’t afford to live there if we both got 2 jobs…"

The likelihood of us being able to stay right where we are is slim if we want DH on shore duty which we really, really, really do.  He’s "entitled" to it after 3 years on a boat.  Even that sucks because while we both want him here, we also know that that means losing sea pay as well as drawing out the amount of time before he can advance again.  If he takes another boat, he will get consecutive sea pay (RAD!) and he can advance faster, which means even more money.  How shitty is it that we may have to make a decision based solely on our financial well-being?  I am pretty sure I would have to work part-time in the evenings to make shore duty work for us.  While I am more than willing to do that, it sort of defeats half the purpose of having DH home if I’m not there with him, you know?  I know it would be great for the boys, but still…

So right now, we’re trying to stay in our area.  We’re still back and forth on whether or not we want shore duty, but the good thing is that we have a few weeks to review our options before we submit our choices.  And yes, I am well aware of the fact that our choices mean sh*t compared to what the good ol’ Coast Guard needs, so we may not get anything we asked for, but we’re still going to ask just like everyone else.

If you had to move every 2-4 years, what state would you avoid like the plague?
